From cereal packets to Cellnet mobiles, payphone police and rows using the phone. This exhibition traces children’s relationships with telephones in the 1980s and 1990s linked to young people’s education, safety, fashion, health, friendships and family life. Research for the exhibition was undertaken as part of a partnership between Telephonic Youth and BT Group Archives (2021-25) exploring histories of children and young people within BT’s collections.

The records shown in the exhibition are part of BT Group Archives’ collection. Learn more about BT’s history here.
