Westminster Children’s Hospital patient
Before the widespread expansion of mobile phone ownership, portable telephone trolleys helped hospital patients to contact family and friends. Telephone trolleys were often paid for by volunteers in hospitals, and provision varied across regions. This payphone trolley, in the image of Humpty Dumpty, was one of two that British Telecom donated to Westminster Children’s Hospital in the late 1980s, and is shown in this photograph in use in 1987. A second trolley, designed especially for children to use at the hospital during the Christmas season, was shaped as Father Christmas.
