Children at primary school, Sussex (1987)
For young children, early learning about telecommunications often focused upon the role telephones might play in an emergency. This photograph shows two young children at a primary school in Sussex in 1987 learning about the 999 UK emergency service through playing a computer game. Computer software packages, including games, became an important part of British Telecom’s educational provision from the mid-1980s onwards, and were developed in collaboration with the Computers in the Curriculum Project at King’s College, London. The 999 emergency service number had been introduced in 1937, and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1987.
